When to choose a cardboard edge protector?

Published on

A Revopal cardboard edge protector is an L-shaped edge guard made to size from recycled paper fibres. You choose edge protectors when your pallet load is secured with strapping or stretch film and the strap must not damage the edges of your boxes. This article explains when edge protectors are the right choice, and when another solution fits better.

What is a cardboard edge protector?

A cardboard edge protector is an L-shaped edge guard built up from glued paper and board layers. You specify it with three dimensions: the width of both legs, measured on the outside, the material thickness and the length. Length, leg width and thickness are available made to size; Revopal confirms the available combinations in the quote. Revopal also sets the order quantity and packing unit per request.

The strength of a protector is not a standard figure: Revopal matches the version to your load, the tension of the strapping and any stacking load. If you place the protectors upright on a pallet load, the length is usually equal to the height of that load. Our advisers calculate with you to find a version that suits your situation.

When is an edge protector the right choice?

The classic use is the pallet load: you place a protector on every upright corner and secure the load with strapping or stretch film. There are applications outside the pallet too. Lying along the top edge, the protector helps prevent the strap from cutting into sheet material, doors or furniture; that is edge protection for products with a sensitive edge. And along the edge of a cardboard pallet or honeycomb board, the protectors guard the vulnerable corner. Read more about dimensions and versions on the product page for the edge protectors.

  • Your load is secured with strapping or stretch film
  • The strap or film must not damage the edges of your boxes
  • You want to help limit damage from impact during transport
  • You want to improve the stacking strength of your packaged load
  • You ship sheet material, doors or furniture with a sensitive edge
  • You want edge protection on a cardboard pallet or honeycomb board

How does the protector help your load?

The protector spreads the pressure of the strapping over a larger area. That makes it less likely that the strap cuts into the edge of your packaging; which version is needed for that depends partly on your strap tension. Lying along the top edge, the protector does the same for loads where only that top edge is vulnerable.

In addition, well-chosen and correctly placed edge protectors can add to the stacking strength of the packaging. Together with strapping or film they help hold the boxes together and limit shifting during transport. How much a protector adds in your situation depends on your load and stacking load; our adviser is happy to think along with you.

Where does the material come from?

Edge protectors are made with recycled paper fibres. If they are clean and dry, they are suitable for paper recycling, together with clean and dry cardboard pallets and boxes; strap and film do not belong in that collection and are disposed of separately. For coatings or special versions, Revopal assesses the recycling option separately.

Revopal has been a manufacturer since 2019 and produces in the Netherlands. Production is organised in a socially responsible way and offers people who face barriers to employment an opportunity. The protectors come from recycled fibres and return to the paper recycling process after use. That keeps the raw materials in the loop, contributing to the circular economy that Revopal steers by.

When should you choose another solution?

An edge protector works together with strapping or film: if your load is not secured by anything, the protector will not keep the boxes in place either.

The standard version is intended for dry storage and transport. If your load ends up in a humid environment, a different version is needed; state this in your request. For glass and other delicate surfaces, extra soft protection is sometimes needed in addition to the protector, together with a version matched to that. For coatings or special versions, Revopal assesses the application separately.

Frequently asked questions

How do you choose the leg width and thickness?

Leg width and thickness depend on the weight of your load, your packaging and the tension of the strapping. Revopal advises a version that suits your load and transport.

Are cardboard edge protectors recyclable?

Yes, provided they are clean and dry: through suitable paper and board collection. Strap and film are disposed of separately. For coatings or special versions, Revopal assesses this separately.

Do edge protectors also protect the pallet itself?

Yes. Along the edge of a Revopallet or honeycomb board they help protect the vulnerable edges.

Do cardboard edge protectors need an ISPM 15 treatment?

No. Revopal supplies them without ISPM 15 treatment; they can therefore be used worldwide.

Not sure how strong it needs to be?

Our advisers will work it out with you based on your load and mode of transport.
